Joliet Junior College
Address: 1215 Houbolt Road Joliet, IL 60431
Joliet Junior College, the nation’s first public community college, offers pre-baccalaureate programs for students planning to transfer to a four-year university. A comprehensive community college, JJC provides occupational education leading directly to employment, adult education and literacy programs, workforce development services, and student support services.
One of seven major construction projects in the college’s master plan, the expansion of the automotive technology service program will help increase enrollment capacity in this high-demand field and provide a technologically advanced learning environment for students. It is supported by funds from the 2008 $89 million voter-approved building bond/referendum.
The project, which expands the program's existing space in the C-Building, is LEED Silver Certified, with LED lighting fixtures, high efficiency HVAC equipment, skylights to use natural sunlight, and bio-trench areas for controlled discharge into sewer system.
This addition creates 17,000 square feet of space for students and technology. The building features precast concrete exterior walls and tinted glass windows, with a steel framed roof structure.
Inside, the area boasts four classrooms, offices, storage and utility space, a parts department, and a commercial auto shop that houses 16 individual vehicle work stalls with lifts, which more than doubles the vehicle capacity of the Automotive Service Technology Department to serve the needs of the JJC community.
